However, it is not always the best option, safest, nor most comfortable for your dog. As a pet sitter, I have taken care of numerous dogs of all sizes around the world. What Size Harness Should I Get For My Dog?

Just like dogs, harnesses vary dramatically in size, shape, comfort, design, and cost. The size of the harness may not relate to the breed of dog you have. The sizes for harnesses range from XXS to XXL; however, dogs are not classified as XXS nor XXL. This also applies to dog clothing and dog boots. Therefore, you must get the right size, making it a comfortable dog harness. The wrong size can cause rubbing and sores, or your dog may be able to get out of the harness and run away. Below is a general guideline for dog sizes. You will want to check with the manufacturer size as they might vary slightly. Additionally, sizes may overlap. If this happens, it is recommended that you get the larger size harness for your dog.

XXS size

The XXS dog harness is designed for dogs with a neck under 12” and a chest size under 16”

XS size

The XS dog harness is designed for dogs with neck size of 10” – 12.5” and a chest size of 10” – 20”. Extra small dogs are generally dogs up to 10 lbs. (4 kg). Therefore, these dogs may require an XS or XXS harness

S size

The small dog harness is designed for dogs with a neck size of 12” – 18” and a chest size of 14” – 24”. Small dogs are generally 11 – 22 lbs. (5 – 10 kg).

M size

A medium dog harness is designed for dogs with a neck size of 14” – 20” and a chest size of 16” – 28”. Medium-sized dogs generally weigh about 23 – 55 pounds (11 – 25 kg).

L size

A large dog harness is designed for dogs with a neck size of 16” – 24” and a chest size of 22” – 33”. Large dogs generally weigh 56 – 98 lbs. (26 – 44 kg).

XL size

The extra-large dog harness is designed for dogs with a neck size of 22” – 33” and a chest size of 28” – 39”. Extra-large dogs weigh over 99 lbs. (45 kg). Therefore, you may need an XL dog harness or an XXL dog harness. You may also want to consider getting a heavy-duty dog harness for your dog.

XXL size

A double extra-large harness is designed for dogs with a neck size over 29” and a chest size over 35”. You may also want to consider a heavy-duty dog harness.

A Puppy harness can also be one that is designed specifically for puppies or you could use one that is XXS or XS or S depending on the breed and size of the puppy.

Types of Harnesses

There are several different types of harnesses on the market now. Most have similar features; however, some are designed with specific features. Some people are looking for the best no pull dog harness, sometimes it is called the dog pulling harness. Meanwhile, some want dog seatbelt harness and others require a dog lift harness. Whether it’s a step in dog harness or an over the head harness, one thing everyone wants is an escape-proof harness. Right now, we are going to talk about the different harnesses based on activities for your dog.

General dog walking harness

The easy walk harness for dogs is the most popular. These harnesses are used for everyday walking and can include the no-pull harness, the dog harness vest, and the backpack dog harness just to name a few.

Dog running harness

Running with your dog or Canicross as some people call it is a very popular activity. When running with your dog you want to make sure you not only have the right harness, you also need a waist belt for yourself and a bungee line.

Sled dog harness

Few people look to buy a sled dog harness. However, for those that need them, it is imperative to have the best one for the dogs. With running and traveling long distances you don’t want your dog to be uncomfortable, or worse, get sores from a rubbing harness.

Dog Lift Harness

These harnesses are very different than the others listed here. A dog lift harness is designed to help lift them. They are designed for dogs with mobility problems. Whether it be from age, injury, or recovering from surgery, the lift harness helps them get on their feet or into vehicles.

Service Dog Harness

You may be requiring a harness that lets other people know your dog is training or has received training specific training. There are several types of service dog harnesses. These include the following:

If you require any service dog vest and harness, you may want to consider the Service Dog Kit. It comes complete with the vest harness, dog ID, travel tags, legal cards, and more.

Dog seatbelt harness

The dog seatbelt harness is designed to keep your dog safe while traveling inside your vehicle. I will be reviewing these harnesses soon.

Dog Harness Buying Guide

When selecting what type of dog harness to buy, there are a few questions you should ask yourself to decide which type of harness is best for you and your dog before you start reading the best dog harness reviews.

  1. What activities are you doing with your dog to want the harness? When currently walking your dog, is he pulling on leash? If so, you will want the best harness for dogs that pull, which is a front clip dog harness. If you are running with your dog, you want a running harness. If you are hiking with your dog, you want a harness he/she can wear for long periods of time. If you are training your dog or it is strong, you may require a dog harness with a handle.
  2. Is your dog better with stepping into a harness or you putting the harness over its head? If your dog does not like to have things placed over its head, then you will want a harness that he/she can step into.
  3. How big is your dog now and how much will he grow? If you have a puppy or a small dog and he is going to grow, you may want something that can adjust so you don’t have to keep buying various sizes. If he has a lot of growing to do you will have to by other sizes as he grows.
  4. What is your budget for a harness? You can always buy a cheap dog harness, or you can buy a very expensive designer dog harness. There are times when the old saying “you get what you pay for” is accurate, but not always. Knowing what your budget is and sticking to it is important. There are a lot of things your dog needs and the prices of items can add up quickly.

The Best Dog Harness

There is not one perfect dog harness for every dog. Everyone has their preference, budget, and likes. All dogs are different as well. One that fits one dog perfectly, may not fit another of the same breed the same. This is because many dogs are mixed breeds and not every dog is exactly the same size even if they are related.

I have found that the RUFFWEAR Web Master Multi-Use Dog Harness is the best harness. It is great for everyday walking, taking your dog hiking or running on trails, and service work. It has a reinforced handle to help lift your dog onto or over things. The five adjustment points make sure you have the perfect fit for your dog.
